AHRMM and SMI Release New Career Development Guide: “Healthcare Supply Chain Leader of the Future”

Supply Chain Leader of the FutureWestborough, MA (July 19, 2017):    The Strategic Marketplace Initiative (SMI®), a non-profit, member-driven consortium of healthcare supply chain thought-leaders, in collaboration with the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM), has released a new career development guide outlining the vision of the healthcare supply chain leader of the future.  This guide, available free of charge on the AHRMM and SMI websites, is designed to help professionals understand future expectations required for supply chain leadership and to help provider and supplier organizations learn how to discover and groom the leaders of tomorrow.

Recognizing the continuing evolution of the healthcare supply chain and the current challenge to develop, recruit, and retain the leaders of tomorrow, SMI and AHRMM joined forces in a collaborative effort to define the core competencies necessary to be a successful supply chain leader in healthcare.

Both AHRMM and SMI conducted extensive research including interviewing current industry executives, reviewing literature and publications, conducting interactive presentations and focus groups, consulting academic resources and utilizing historical industry information.   The results culminated into a comprehensive guide that encompasses four key building blocks:   qualifications, competencies, experience and personal traits that define the ideal supply chain leader of the future.

SMI Associate Executive Director, Dennis Orthman said, “Supply chain is no longer a back-office, purchasing, storeroom-centric profession.   Healthcare supply chain has moved into a much more visible, diverse, and strategic imperative by the C-suite.   Traditional logistics and purchasing skills of yesterday are being replaced with data analytics, global commerce, clinical and systems integration and alternative payment models - forcing the leaders of tomorrow into a new realm of supply chain.  This guide is designed to shed light on the critical success factors and skills the next generation of supply chain leaders will need.”

AHRMM Senior Director Supply Chain, Mike Schiller said, “Supply chain costs are the second largest expense next to staffing costs, and the role of the supply chain professional should reflect this level of importance. Population health, social determinants, evidence-based outcomes data are some of the expected sources that will be used to guide strategic procurement decisions moving forward. As the continuum of care, and responsibility for that care, expands into the non-acute care setting, today’s supply chain professional must possess the necessary competencies required to guide an increasingly complex supply chain. This guide helps to identify those skills, as well as the recognized methods of acquiring and enhancing these competences.”
