SMI Releases Non-Acute Care Market Handbook

Scituate, MA (January 28, 2013): Strategic Marketplace Initiative (SMI), a non-profit, member-driven organization of healthcare supply chain executives, today released a supply chain program handbook entitled, “Servicing the Non-Acute Care Marketplace.”  This handbook was created to assist the nation’s healthcare providers and suppliers as they envision and implement new models of patient care to improve quality and reduce costs in response to the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

The need to service non-acute healthcare locations is a growing reality for all supply chain professionals. A team of SMI members embarked on an initiative to provide the supply chain industry with a better understanding of non-acute care facilities.  This team, comprised of SMI executive members from healthcare providers, manufacturers, distributors, technology companies, and collaborators, created this handbook based on the expertise and insight from various non-acute care supply chain programs from integrated delivery networks from across the country.

SMI’s Executive Director Tom Hughes said, “As more U.S. healthcare providers are acquiring physician practices, opening new clinics and establishing non-acute care facilities, SMI strives to help the industry understand the supply logistics, cost management, clinical integration and the many challenges that arise from these complex opportunities.”

SMI Team Leader Tom Egan and Vice President of Corporate Sales for Medline Industries, Inc. said, “The goal of this handbook is to promote understanding of the changes taking place as a result of non-acute care sites. The SMI team recognized the need to empower health care supply chain professionals with information and insight into this new marketplace.”

Details from the “Servicing the Non-Acute Care Marketplace” Handbook are being presented by SMI Initiative Team Member Steve Laycock, Materials Operation Manager at Intermountain Healthcare and SMI Senior Director, Dennis Orthman at The World Congress 7th Annual Leadership Summit on Health Care Supply Chain, January 28-29th in Las Vegas, NV.
